Installations + Exhibitions

Inhuman//Alien | Canton-Sardine Gallery | Vancouver, BC | 8/12/23 - 9/30/23
Exhibition of two new interactive transdisciplinary works Observer Effect and Distorted Reflection. These works reflect on our increasing interaction with artificial intelligences of many kinds and the ways in which these interactions affect and distort the ways in which we see ourselves. Works consist of handmade audio reactive mirror film sculptures, multi-camera video installations, AI based body and face tracking with interactive components, custom neural networks for control of audio and visual components, original sound design and audio routing schemes.

Seeing is Believing | Trinity Square Video | 10/17/2022 - 11/30/2022
Joint solo show of Devin Ronneberg and Kite’s solo and collaborative work investigating the effects of rapid technological development on humanity's experience of truth and reality. Works include: Interactive installation of Fever Dream, A series of 4 print works by Ronneberg created using Style Transfer AI entitled “Revisionist Histories”, a collaborative sculpture, and mourning cakes by Kite.

Fever Dream | Everson Museum of Art | 7/21/2022 - 8/21/2022
Exhibition of the interactive version of Fever Dream at the Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse, NY. In response to the audience’s proximity in the gallery, a large projection flips between channels algorithmically tuned in to scraped footage of conspiracy theories, paranormal and extraterrestrial sightings, and recent news broadcasts. The work plumbs the depths of the settler-colonial psyche and the ways in which settler conspiracies are often founded on a denial of Indigenous agency, such as the belief that “ancient aliens” are responsible for the building of Indigenous earthworks and monuments.

AI Delivered: Abject AI | Chronus Art Center | Shanghai | 7/3/21 - 10/20/21
AI Delivered: Abject AI, attempts to raise questions on the epistemological finitude of assumed intelligence by AI as well as problematizing the unfretted optimism on AI and its instrumental utility propagated by corporate interest and the panoptic society.

Experimenta Life Forms: International Triennial of Media Art | Touring Exhibition | 2021-2023
Experimenta Life Forms is a timely exhibition featuring a diversity of artforms including robotics, bio-art, screen-based works, installations, participatory and generative art. The exhibition showcases 20 leading Australian and international artists whose work makes significant contribution to current dialogues about the changing landscape of life as we know it.

Speculations on the InfraRed | EFA Project Space | 2021
Speculations on the Infrared explores tactics of speculative Indigenous futurism that foreground and redeploy the subsumed and repressive nature of the settler state’s relationship to colonized peoples as a potential tool of sovereignty. Considering infra- as “below,” as in the spectrum below visible light, but also that which is “further on,” the works in this exhibition speculate on the latent desires for Indigeneity and the subaltern Indigenous DNA of the settler national identity and mythos.

Telling Rock Virtual | ISEA | 2020
Telling rock recreated as a VR experience in Unreal Engine. Advancing the themes of non-human relationality central to this year’s edition of ISEA, Suzanne Kite and Devin Ronneberg’s sculpture, Telling Rock, proposes an ethics of materiality in the context of artificial intelligence. Grounded in Kite’s research on Lakhota ontology, and Devin’s experience with composite materials and designing custom hardware and software, Telling Rock uses artificial intelligence and interactive sensors to create a sculpture that is actively-engaged with its interactive environment. Equal parts technical achievement and spiritual invocation, Telling Rock listens in to our ethical entanglements with materials and machines, and enjoins us to ask: how can we make things the right way?

La Machine Qui Enseignait Des Airs Aux Oiseaux | MAC Montreal | 2020
Collaboration with Suzanne Kite to design and fabricate large scale carbon fiber sculptures of imaginary landforms that intersect with the gallery.

Indigenous Futurisms: Transcending Past/Present/Future | MoCNA | 2020
Installation of Inyan Iye (Telling Rock) at MoCNA along with a public performance and artist talk given by Devin Ronneberg and Suzanne Kite.

Imaginenative | Toronto | 2019
Inyan Iye (Telling Rock) featured as one of 3 physical installations chosen for Imaginenative 2019.

Inner Ear Vision: Sound As Medium | Bemis Center for Contemporary Art | 2019
Installation of Inyan Iye (Telling Rock) in collaboration with Suzanne Kite at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Art curated by Raven Chacon, Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe, Maria Elena Buszek.

Sensory Entanglement | Concordia University | 2018
Roundtable participants will offer insights into the collaborative processes that have drawn from emerging technologies to pioneer a radical new approach to Indigenous heritage, in which research on the senses can be experienced by the senses directly through the creation of three portable sensory environments developed as uniquely embodied means for cultural knowledge transfer.

Innerspace | Downtown, Los Angeles | 2016
Multimedia installation featuring digital works by 3d visual Artists Crash Override and Raycast Future Fantasy and sculptures and installation pieces fabricated by Devin Ronneberg.

Searching... | California Institute of the Arts | 2015
Installation for interaction with spatialized speakers and proximity sensors, that explores our relationship to the ever increasing amount of information presented to us and our ability to filter signal from noise.

Fellowships, Residencies, and Grants

One of Many: Wadi Rum Residency | 2023
Selected to be a resident artist for the One of Many Residency which takes place in the Wadi Rum desert in Jordan. The residency was created as an immersive experience for multidisciplinary creators and leaders to elevate the most critical conversations of our time. The theme of this year was centered around water, it's necessity, and the rights we have or do not have to it.

Sundance Art of Practice Fellowship | 2021
Awarded the Sundance Art of Practice Fellowship for 2021-22 in support of my continued work investigating the creative and destructive potentials of Artificial Intelligence.

Sundance New Frontier Story Lab Fellow | 2020
Selected to participate in Sundance Foundation’s New Frontier Story Lab 2020 for a project entitled “Seeing is Believing” that is currently in development. The Story Lab was an opportunity for 5 small creative teams to receive focused guidance and input from Sundance’s invited faculty to develop and workshop the selected works. Participants were chosen on the basis of their use of new technologies to tell powerful stories in novel ways.

Inyan Iye | 2018
Composition, Design, Fabrication, and Software / Hardware development for multimedia machine learning installation work Inyan Iye (Telling Rock) in collaboration with Suzanne Kite. In addition to the fabrication of the sculpture, I developed custom software and handmade circuitry to wirelessly transmit DMX data to an inexpensive microcontroller to send custom lighting messages from TouchDesigner to the sculpture as mediated by a machine learning pipeline utilizing Wekinator intended to translate a participants engagement with the sculpture into a dialogue with the machine.
